Dr. Berkinshaw has been practicing orthodontics in the Annapolis area since 1981 when he joined Dr. Charles Toomey, forming Toomey and Berkinshaw Orthodontics. They continued to practice together until Dr. Toomey's retirement in 1995. He has since maintained a solo practice. Dr. Berkinshaw received his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College in 1974 and Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Missouri/Kansas City in 1979. In 1981 he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Master of Science degree and Certificate in Orthodontics.
Dr. Berkinshaw has been a Senior Attending on the staff of the Washington, D.C. Children's National Medical Center's Orthodontic and Pediatric Dental Residency Programs since 1986. The Orthodontic Residency Program presently resides at the Washington Hospital Center. In 1989 he became the first Board Certified Orthodontist in Anne Arundel County, achieving a standard of competency and excellence awarded only by The American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Berkinshaw continues to stay abreast of the latest orthodontic techniques by routinely attending continuing education courses which enable him to provide his patients with the finest orthodontic care available.
Dr. Berkinshaw is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) and Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists (MASO). He is a member of the College of Diplomates of The American Board of Orthodontics and The American Dental Association. He is also a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy-an international honorary dental organization recognizing outstanding dentists and celebrating their achievements. Dr. Berkinshaw has served the American Association of Orthodontists as a member and chairman of the AAO Council on Communications.
Dr. Berkinshaw lives in Annapolis with his wife, Georgie. They have two grown children, Charlie and Jeannie. Both he and Georgie are active in community and civic associations. In his spare time Dr. Berkinshaw enjoys sailing, especially the Wednesday Night Races. He is also an avid bee keeper, supplying friends and family with "Dr. B's Honey". Our outside garden bee hive, visible from the treatment area, is a great source of education and entertainment for patients and their families. |
